Project Accountant (1 year contract)

Location: Toronto

Position Overview

The Project Accountant will be responsible for job costing, involving budget management, change requests, tracking and reporting for individual clients’ jobs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Participate and support month end closing & reporting
  • Participate & improve cash flow monitoring
  • Review and approve budget revisions and project estimates at completion
  • Review and approve project setups, modifications, and budget updates in the accounting system
  • Support year end close and provide relevant analyses for internal and external auditors
  • Produce work in process (WIP) reports for client & leadership team
  • Provide financial reporting and analysis including time on page, budget variance and job burn rates
  • Provide expertise and leadership to organization in job profitability and ensure efficiencies of processes implemented within our new accounting software environment
  • Work with the client account lead to ensure all time and out of pockets are billed in accordance with the terms of the contract, including gathering all the out of pocket receipts to support the invoice (if required), secure approvals
  • Liaise with the client and others in the finance team
  • Enforce documentation and approvals required in new business, billable, non-billable job creation and closure
  • Analyze and report on client revenue, profitability, and utilization and recommend improvements
  • Supports revenue, client budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Review and recommend changes to systems and processes to improve efficiency and controls
  • Compliance of Sarbanes-Oxley controls requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree or certificate in accounting
  • Working towards (or have) an accounting designation: CA, CMA, CGA
  • Solid knowledge in project cost accounting (1-2 year experience)
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Advanced Proficiency in Excel is mandatory
  • Knowledge of MAS 300 (Accpac) application would be an asset
  • Experience in a fast paced industry such as agency advertising and marketing would be considered an asset
  • Ability to travel within Canada is a must
