Meet The Spafax Thought Leaders is our Q&A series highlighting the people behind Spafax – what they do, how they think, and where they see the industry going. From day-to-day operations to big-picture strategy, these conversations offer a window into the ideas shaping our work.
Paul Colley, Chief Technical Officer at Spafax, has been with the company for over 15 years and has played a central role in transforming its technology infrastructure and media delivery systems. From overseeing the complete redesign of the media supply chain to driving innovation in data and connectivity services, Paul has helped define Spafax’s approach to aviation media and content technology. His leadership ensures that the company stays agile, efficient, and ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving tech landscape
“I cycle a lot. The last two years, I’ve cycled from Manchester to London in a day for charity (220 miles / 350 km). I also like to shop! On a business trip, I nearly always have the most shoes with me of the group I’m traveling with…”
The biggest challenge is the same as it’s always been: the continually changing technology landscape. Over the years, we’ve seen big shifts, from overhead screens to personal TV systems to VOD systems with higher and higher capacity. Aircraft have also become increasingly connected, from initial phone-only services to GEO satellites, air-to-ground services, and now LEO.
The challenge is navigating these changes and delivering solutions in an agile way for our customers while anticipating what future services airlines will want to offer. Recently, Spafax delivered the largest-ever content set to an aircraft and has live-streamed events like the King’s coronation and national football finals. We’re shaping a vision for an experience service provider model that will be key to our business going forward.
To use an often-overused analogy, it’s like changing the engines of an aircraft while it’s flying. Given our reputation for quality and our large number of clients, stopping and starting again or accepting a lower level of service was not an option. We succeeded in completely changing our media supply chain while delivering more content than ever and maintaining the highest quality standards in the industry.
Spafax has been at the forefront of data analysis since we released Nexus, the first cross-vendor analytics platform in the market. We’ve built on that foundation, extending those analytics to improve content merchandising onboard and better determine content value for our airline customers.
With our in-house data science team, we’ve created Fusion, which combines multiple datasets to provide unique insights into passenger value for advertising and media sales. This platform powers the largest media client base in the inflight space.
There have been many, but I’m always proudest of our most recent work. Two projects stand out. First, our connected experience services for Lufthansa Group, including lounge streaming and live sports tickers, reflect our vision for a seamless, connected passenger journey. Second, our Fusion platform for media sales, which integrates with Connect, our inflight media sales marketplace. Together, they form a unique platform for maximizing media value and streamlining the buying experience.
We constantly trial and adopt new technologies when they are right for our clients within our business, be it AI now or other technologies. I am seeing several paths for AI adoption within Spafax. Tactical product-based solutions from third parties, such as AI screening, for example, are happening today. Then, organic growth within the business from tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, where there are tactical solutions built by users and tech teams, such as the wrangling of disparate data, is happening again today. I see these as useful tools that deliver productivity gains, reducing workloads at the resource-by-resource level.
Where the revolution is happening at an operational level is in agentic workflows and agents interacting with our enterprise systems, performing a significant number of tasks that are manual today. I see skilled, knowledgeable staff managing groups of agents to deliver skilled, insight-driven outcomes for our clients, utilizing the power of AI agents to deliver at a scale we haven’t been able to get close to today.
AI is also generating content, and today it does so with imagery and production projects. Moving forward, we will see AI-driven personalized content experiences becoming commonplace.
We work with partners who share our values and are committed to delivering great service and achieving commercial success. It’s that simple. Our door is always open to partners who share our values.
Cutting-edge technology can and should be user-friendly. Complexity is not an excuse for a poor user experience.
Don’t take your eyes off the deliverables. Professionally and personally, getting to the end product is critical. Too many projects fail to deliver. On a personal level, nothing gives me more satisfaction than seeing something I helped create being used as intended. It’s like the carpenter seeing someone sit on a chair they made. That connection between craft and impact really resonates with me.
If you had to guess the next big trend in inflight entertainment or media delivery, what would it be, and why?
It’s not really a guess. It’s more for less, and quicker. Content volume has steadily grown over the past decade and a half, and IFE will continue to benefit from this. Content will be produced faster and at a lower unit cost.
At the same time, rising levels of onboard connectivity will unlock more sophisticated customer experiences. Whether it’s edge caching or better personalization, connectivity will be the key enabler of the next wave of innovation. It will allow airlines to create more dynamic, experiences, with content and services increasingly tailored to individual passengers. The opportunity is not simply to bring more content onboard, but to use connectivity to make the overall experience more relevant, timely and seamless. In addition, the strategic utilization of first party data will enable airlines to increase revenue generation inside and outside of their ecosystem.
